Since Jesus Came Into My Heart
What a wonderful change in my life has been wrought
Since Jesus came into my heart!
I have light in my soul for which long I had sought,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
Chorus
Since Jesus came into my heart,
Since Jesus came into my heart,
Floods of joy o’er my soul
Like the sea billows roll,
Since Jesus came into my heart.
I have ceased from my wandering and going astray,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
And my sins, which were many, are all washed away,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
I’m possessed of a hope that is steadfast and sure,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
And no dark clouds of doubt now my pathway obscure,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
There’s a light in the valley of death now for me,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
And the gates of the City beyond I can see,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
I shall go there to dwell in that City, I know,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
And I’m happy, so happy, as onward I go,
Since Jesus came into my heart!
There are two main definitions of the word “since” – The first being “because” and the second being “From then until now.” From the perspective of a Christian, both meanings of that word should apply to our lives.
We have become sons and daughters of God, not because of works, not because of who are parents are, or because of how good we are. We are saved because of what Jesus did on the Cross. Jesus is the center of the Bible and all of Scripture points to him. Salvation is found in Him alone. There is no other name whereby men can be saved except the name of Jesus. In an age where people believe that there are many “paths” to God, we cannot forget that He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No man comes to the Father, but by Him. This is not an arrogant position, but it is the truth. Our actions may sometimes communicate to others an arrogance about Christianity (we have something that others don’t) and that is not the right attitude. However, we must stand firm on this fundamental truth, and communicate this truth to the world in love.
The second meaning of the word “since” is “From then until now.” That definition, too, can provoke some challenging questions for us. What have you done for Christ “From then until now – From the time of your salvation until the present?” This is not meant to beat up on anyone, but to challenge you to ask yourself, how am I different “since Jesus came into my heart?” The Bible tells that “Any man that is in Christ is a new creation.” Are you different now than you were before you were a Christian? Are you bearing the fruit of the Spirit in your life – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, meekness, and self-control? These are some of the traits that should be evident once Jesus comes into your heart.
This hymn highlights some of the changes that should occur after Jesus comes into our hearts:
· We have a Light and a Hope.
· We have ceased from wandering.
· We don’t have to doubt where we are going and who is leading us day by day.
· We do not have to fear death.
· We have the hope of everlasting life and an eternal home.
I hope you share the sentiments of this song, and that God’s unspeakable joy (another good hymn for another day) has flooded your life “Since Jesus came into your heart.”
