Up From The Grave He Arose
Low in the grave He lay, Jesus my Savior,
Waiting the coming day, Jesus my Lord!
CHORUS
Up from the grave He arose,
With a mighty triumph o’er His foes,
He arose a Victor from the dark domain,
And He lives forever, with His saints to reign.
He arose! He arose!
Hallelujah! Christ arose!
Vainly they watch His bed, Jesus my Savior;
Vainly they seal the dead, Jesus my Lord!
Death cannot keep its Prey, Jesus my Savior;
He tore the bars away, Jesus my Lord!
The chorus of this great hymn contains some awesome theology. It reminds us that Jesus arose triumphantly. He defeated sin. He defeated death. He defeated the grave. He arose as the Triumphant King. On Palm Sunday, the Jews were desiring a political king on this earth. On Resurrection Sunday, Jesus was the Triumphant King who reigns over heaven and earth. The chorus also reminds us that Jesus is alive. We don’t worship a God of the past, or a God in a statue. We don’t worship someone that is just a Good man found in a Good book written a few thousand years ago. The Lord Jesus Christ is alive forevermore. As the angel said, He is not here (not in the tomb), but He is risen. Finally, the chorus reminds us that He will reign forever with the saints. These saints, however, don’t get to reign with Him because of their own righteousness. These saints aren’t those that get to Heaven because of their great wealth, great looks, great families, or great political power. These saints are the blood-bought, blood-cleansed sons and daughters of God. We get to arise and reign with Him because of what He did – He died on Friday and Hallelujah, He arose on Sunday.
I hope as you celebrate the Resurrection today that you can rejoice that your sins have been washed away and that you too one day will reign with Him. I also hope today reminds you that there is a future resurrection coming, and I want to close this week with Paul’s words found in I Thessalonians 4:
The Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
Wherefore comfort one another with these words.
