Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus

“‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, Just to take Him at His word;
just to rest upon His promise, just to know, “Thus saith the Lord.”

Chorus
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him! How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust Him more!

Verse 2
O how sweet to trust in Jesus, just to trust His cleansing blood;
and in simple faith to plunge me neath the healing, cleansing flood!

Verse 3
Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus, just from sin and self to cease;
just from Jesus simply taking life and rest, and joy and peace.

Verse 4
I’m so glad I learned to trust thee, precious Jesus, Savior, friend;
and I know that thou art with me, wilt be with me to the end.”

If we are honest with ourselves, we would probably admit that trusting in Jesus is not always “sweet.” In difficult times, we might even want to change the words to the this hymn to “Tis so tough” or “Tis so trying,” because it can be hard to trust in Jesus when we are going through certain pains and struggles in our lives, or during the times where we can’t see exactly how God is working.  However, as we mature spiritually, we should be able to echo the prayer found in the chorus – “O for grace to trust Him more.”  As part of this trusting in Jesus more, the author of the hymn reminds us of some things we can just do:

  • “Just to take Him at His word” – To be able to take Jesus at His word, we have to study The Word.  We have to read and know the promises that Jesus gave us as His followers.  His words are comforting, and His promises are true.  If, however, we don’t know them or can’t remember them, it becomes very difficult to put our trust in them.
  • “Just from sin and self to cease” – How many of the problems and worries in our lives come from the sin that we continue in, or the things that we do with selfish motives?  The author reminds us that as we cease doing those kinds of sinful and selfish things, and grow in our relationship with the Lord, how much “sweeter” life becomes.
  • “Just from Jesus simply taking life, and rest, and joy and peace” – There are four things the author reminds us that Jesus has promised to give us which are found in Scripture:
    • Life – Jesus said “I am come that they may have life and have it more abundantly.”  John 10:10
    • Rest – Jesus said “Come unto me all ye that labour and I will give you rest.”  Matthew 11:28
    • Joy – Jesus said “These things I have spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you and that your joy might be full.”  John 15:11
    • Peace – Jesus said  “Peace I leave with you.  My peace I give unto you.”  John 14:27

Many years ago, Nike came up with a marketing slogan that is still in use today.  That familiar slogan is “Just Do It.”  I would encourage you today to put on the spiritual “shoes” that Paul refers to in Ephesians 6:15, accept Jesus’ promise of peace, and “Just Do It” – Just trust in Him.   Take the opportunities that God gives you to exercise your faith, and to prove Him over and over.   As we exercise our faith, we will find that trusting in Him gets “sweeter and sweeter as the days go by” (another old chorus for another day).
